While I’m waiting on my lower unit parts to come in for my ’54 Fleetwin, I decided to look at my Sea king which is next in line for an overhaul. I’ve identified the Seaking as a 1962 model identical to a Gale 5D20. So my question is do Gale motors of this vintage use the same lower unit / gear case parts as the Johnson’s and Evinrudes? I might as well go ahead and go through the lower units on both at the same time now that I’m in the routine. Let me know what you think, thanks!

Your best friend will be a parts list for your motor. If the part number is the same, the part is the same. Ok, having said that, the answer to your question most likely is yes. If not the same year, then probably a different year. Where you will find differences is mostly in the powerhead. For instance, the Gale does not have a removable cylinder head. And of course obvious things like carburetor knobs and motor hood.

Agreed. I have a Gale manual that covers several different makes and sizes of their motors but there are no part #’s in the exploded view picture of the assemblies. I’ll just tear into it and look for myself by comparing parts for my 2 motors. On a slightly different topic, the handle grip for my Fleetwin is broke where it mounts to the tiller. I’m having a hard time finding the exact part (EVINRUDE 203307) online, will other handle grips for Johnson’s interchange? I’m more Johnson tiller grips that I do for the Evinrudes. Thanks again!

There are a bunch of OMC twist grips with the same fitment but different color, design, etc. Big thing to look out for is some have the screw going down from the top, some come up from the bottom. Having said that, I’m pretty sure I have a 203307 (used) out in the shop. I’ll take a looksee in the morning if you are interested. Let me know.

Richard also has the parts book on line. 5D20V (Viking) is the same motor with different decals
