I pulled this more modern $40 jewel off the rack today for something
different to do for a change. I’m “guessing” that I’m missing the
carbon seal, spring, etc., for the lower main seal, seeing the same
year Johnson had those, according to the M.E. parts diagrams.

When I pulled the lower unit all that was there was a brass cup washer that sits
      on the driveshaft cross pin.
Did the Gale made models use the carbon seal as well?

      Thanks.

I have several of the Gale built 5hp models. They use the same setup as the 5.5 & 7.5hp motors you’re use to. You can look up all the parts that are missing on MarineEngune. You may even have some left over from scrap motors? Good luck!

Thanks Dan, I also came home from Tomahawk with two (to make one)
1960 Sea King 5 hp models, and it appears that they may use
the same carbon seal assembly……. I hope so, all those part new on M.E.
          are over $100.
Compression is 62 & 63 psi, marginal at best, so whatever I do I’m
just throwing money out the window……. but I’d like to hear it run
at least once before it goes back to sleep!

Thanks Bob. If the frozen up, 1960 Sea King doesn’t have the
needed parts, then I might go that route.
