I recently acquired a 1959 Evinrude 50 HP Starflite. I noticed that it was a little different in that it was missing a rod and lever that is part of the starter group. On line videos show motors running with and without, though it seems the electric start motor videos are more likely to not have the piece. The videos seem to show them running just fine. If the motor is an electric start, is this piece necessary? My guess is that it is some sort of mechanical safety that prevents starting the motor while in gear, but it might have a different purpose. Anybody know?

Those parts prevent pulling the starter rope when motor is in gear. Sure it will run without the feature, but it can also toss you out over the stern if you rope start it in gear. Worst case scenario is it then runs around in a circle, coming back to run over you and slice you up like a hunk of meat.
