I picked up a 1960 Evinrude 5520 5-1/2 HP, two Eska’s,
and a rusty OMC fuel tank for $50. Will any luck, I hope
to get the Evinrude and one Eska running.
The Rude looks to have been home to a brood of mice
at one time. Previous owner cleaned out the nest, but
it aint pretty under the hood.
Is there any one cleaner that might work best on "mouse piss"
residue?
Were these good motors in the day?
Thanks, Buccaneer
Have used simple green or purple power or something like that. My have to clean it a couple of times and then rinse off some. Not sure about the Eska’s never had any of them, but the 5-1/2 Evinrude and Johnson motors always were great running fishing motors. I have a 59 Johnson 5-1/2 that does not look real good but always starts on the first or 2nd pull, no speed demon but extremely reliable

how is it motors multiply when the garage lights get
turned off?
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like it’s worth restoring, but will have
to check the compression and go from there!
I wasn’t looking for the Eska’s, but they seem to find me sometimes!
mine is a little low @65 and still runs good need to check it again since it has been running checked after it had set for a long time (years) with leaking lower unit, resealed it this spring and went through carb and ignition too, back to running as good as ever.

Those Eskas are pretty easy to coax to life. I bet if you put some fresh gas in them, they’ll fire.
And yes, those 5.5’s are great motors. I prefer the clam shell style, but the later ones are great too.
