My ’61 Lark III 40HP needed a new head. I’m finally ready to slap it on there. Do I need to seal the threads? Is there a head gasket sealant that is recommended? I’m fairly sure I’ve got the manual somewhere so I can look up the torque specs.

Other than parts, what do I need to knock this job out?

I have a salt water back ground, so always look at things from a corrosion prevention point of view….So, I always recommend cleaning the block and bolts threads, then coating the threads/bolt shanks with the OMC/merc/Yamaha gasket sealer. I usually coat the outer surfaces of the gasket with gasket sealer also. Some head gaskets do not require sealer, that is usually printed on the gasket….
