Been looking at some other motors to possible use as parts for mine. I need a new shifting fork (part #375755 "Shifter Lever and Pin Assembly"), my clutch dog is rusted to the cradle (what broke the shifting fork), and the forward & reverse gears are a little bit chewed up.

I found someone selling a cheap 1954 10hp which I’m quite sure is actually a 1955 judging by the decals. Which, if any, parts could I transplant to my motor? They also have a new prop for it which I wouldn’t mind.

Also found a 1956 and a 1958 10hp together for a pretty good deal. Would the ’58s lower unit be a direct swap?

1958 was a year of change, so no on that one. Likewise, 1955 was a year of change, so a ’55 will work, ’54 won’t. There may be internal parts that will swap 1954-55-56, can’t say for sure without going through the parts books

Frank, the part number in my book for a ’54 matches that part number he has.

I have actually been looking for the powerhead from a ’54 10HP. A ’54 has the seahorse cast into the leg. If you end up buying it I might be interested in the powerhead. The powerhead is a one year part number, so it won’t match anything but another ’54

The 1958 10hp gearcase would NOT fit on your engine. The 10hps used the larger 15/18hp style gearcase up through 1957, OMC adapted the smaller 5.5/7.5hp gearcases for the 10hp in 1958.
I’m thinking the closest match would be the 1956 10hp gearcase, unless you are positive the 54 10hp is actually a 55 10hp.
Keep in mind that spending money on these complete engines to salvage a few parts might lead to disappointment. The clutch dog and gears are likely to be worn on most old 10hps, so don’t pay a lot because this is just a gamble.

So in general if the part number is the same for motors regardless of year then that part is the exact same?

For mechanical parts, yes. For things like cowls, just because of being for different years they have different numbers, even though they fit more than one year.

Gabriel Im in Ontario as well, and stock a large inventory of OMC parts. PM me if you end up needing anything.

My Johnson book calls for the same gear set for QD-12 thru QD-16B.

The ’54 and older is a four bolt lower unit mounted with 1/4 20 bolts. The gears may possibly be different to. The ’55 – ’57 has the larger 5 bolt lower unit, so those 3 years will have more compatibility. If you just need a fork and dog, i would just forgo buying a complete motor for now. A member will likely furnish you a good fork for cheap, but the shift dog, will be hard to find in good use able condition. This will deliver better service, if replaced for new.
