A guy offered to give me a 1971 Johnson 40 hp, model number 40EL71B. When he took it off his boat he snipped the wiring harness off outside the cover, so the internal wiring harness is intact but there are bare wires hanging out. I’m assuming that a new “boat side” wiring harness doesn’t exist for this engine, so what would be the options for sourcing new wires and rewiring to a starter?

July 30, 2020 at 4:07 pm #210398OK, so I. found a wiring diagram, which is very helpful. But I’m wondering if there is a solution for the missing plugs. Without a plug I basically have to hard-wire the motor to my boat, and can’t just unplug it to take it off and work on it. Has anyone come up with a solution for this in the past?

Trying to hard wire the harness is a big undertaking that will probably not work out very well….

July 31, 2020 at 2:39 pm #210486It’s a black plug, not the red one from later years. It’s 5 pin, I believe, as there are 5 wires for the ignition and choke switch. I’d love to find one like that, so if anyone has one, let me know and I’ll snag it. Otherwise, I haven’t seen one on ebay or my local marinas, or anywhere else online.
But I’m also considering bypassing the harness and wiring straight to the ignition like I mentioned before. It’s only 5 wires, plus the 2 for the battery terminals. It doesn’t seem *that* crazy, but maybe I’m wrong?
July 31, 2020 at 3:03 pm #210487If you decide to hard-wire it, consider mounting a terminal strip somewhere under the cowling to make a connect/disconnect point.
July 31, 2020 at 11:06 pm #210518You can certainly use any wiring harness, including the common red plug harness to hard wire the engine…Yes, the color codes will be different, but that is no big deal. Just cut off the red plug and strip the harness back sufficiently to provide enough wire to reach everything…
