Last Saturday I took a chance and ordered a revolving chuck on Ebay with free shipping for my lathes tail stock. The FedEx tracking number showed it leaving New Delhi right away, going thru Dubai, Italy, Memphis, Vancouver, Victoria, and delivered to my front door today! That’s five days from India and it takes a few weeks now to mail a letter across town?

As a bonus, besides being very reasonably priced, the item appears to be of much higher quality than I was expecting. This seller got five stars feedback from me and I’m definitely going to be checking out their store.

Good for you Mumbles! I order stuff from California and it comes in three days. I order stuff from Texas and it take three weeks!
Go figure!

Somebody has there axes in order there in India!

I am in Canada and an experience E-bay buyer with 1587 transactions. If I bought parts in USA and shipped to Canada, it would take two or three weeks to arrive but If I bought the part from Germany mostly, it would come a week or two or less depends on the DHL flying schedule.

Mumbles, you got me curious. What particular operation would
one use a tailstock chuck? Perhaps I need one!

I’m guessing your rig is a lot sturdier than a live center on the end
of a shaft, but you could not machine the end of the shaft with
your chuck attached.
Sign me curious…..

Evinrude 25: Two to three weeks sounds about right now for items from the US. Other things I have bought from Sicily and Britain arrive a lot quicker than that and for far less shipping costs to.

Buck: Yes, you need one of these. Everyone with a lathe needs one of these!

What they are used for is holding shafts with no centering hole in them. Lots of starter and electric motor armatures are made this way and if you can’t support the commutator end while cleaning it up, it’s hard to get a smooth cut and have the commutator come out centered to the shaft.

The other way I do it is to make a cap which fits snugly onto the end of the shaft and has a center hole drilled in it. This works good but I can never find the correct cap when I need it and always end up having to make another one. To top it off, this always seems to happen when I’m in a hurry and needed the job done yesterday

There’s no monetary incentive for the P.O. to get in a big hurry. They make the same salary, whether they hurry or not, where as a company has to be competitive.

Come to think of it, I have a Jacobs armature chuck with the brass jaws that
adjust like a drill bit chuck. Snug it up on the armature, lock it, oil it up,
and away you go.
Your chuck would be much more versatile though!

Using brass jaws in a three jaw Jacobs has been done for ages. Just have to keep the grip not too tight and the jaws well lubricated. A rotating chuck makes life simpler.

This is the one I bought but with an MT3 taper. The seller has them with different tapers and different size chucks and also 4 jaw versions. Shop around before buying and be sure to use the ‘Make An Offer’ option!
