Do these fuel tanks lend themselves to be taken apart for de-rusting,
repair, and sealing, without major damage to tank or trauma to
      guy using the soldering iron?

After wire wheeling the tank, It does have some pin holes in the top and
bottom panels, but fairly solid to the touch all over
The solder joints are cracked on both tank mount brackets, and at the
trough near where the gas line hooks up.
I’d like to try to remove the top of the tank, clean, repair, and prep the tank
for sealer, re-solder the top and and slosh sealer around.

I repaired the tank on the Wisconsin RBM in a similar fashion, and took
apart a sad looking tank on a Caille to use for a pattern to make a new
one, but just wondering what luck others have had on these Elto tanks.

I have taken the top off of them for dent repair.
Definitely not beyond your skill level.

Thanks Tubs, I feel better already seeing yours apart.
I just wish mine looked that nice inside!

It was a really nice tank except for this dent.
It was going to take quite a bit of filler to
make it go away. Did the best I could but
the metal was stretched quite a bit. I much
            prefer working with aluminum.
