1970 Evinrude 33 / 33053m Have engine out and doing everything but crank seals, but wanted to know how hard it would be t replace them and if there indicators for leaking crank seal. Bought motor sitting sideways in the back of a boat i bought, so I have no history. It shows some lower end work, but has original coils and ignition parts.

Put some oil on the crank at the seal and turn the motor over, assuming reed plate is in place.  If you see bubbles, replace the seal.

Here’s how I test the top seal for leaks while spinning the motor over with a wrench and the plugs out.

Your statement  …doing everything but crank seals…  confuses me.  Do you have the powerhead all apart?
