Hi,
My Elgin runs great, but after about 30 minutes of motoring today (freshwater lake, 14′ boat), it started behaving like it had a spun prop. Motor revs up fine, but boat won’t go over 10mph or so. Has a brand new NOS prop that I just installed today. I took the prop off and put it in a vise to see if it was spun, but it doesn’t appear to be. What’s the next most probable culprit? Clutch slipping? Same thing happened on the last day of boating last year, which was what made me replace the prop.
Thanks,
Pat
May 30, 2022 at 9:10 pm #260726Remove the prop and draw a line with a Sharpie across the back side of the prop. Remount the prop and go for a ride. Once it slips remove the prop and see if the line you drew is still straight across. If it isn’t your prop hub is slipping.

May 31, 2022 at 1:57 pm #260756Pat I don’t know what a 35 elgin looks like but a friend of mine had a force outboard and they took the exhaust direction tube off. The exhaust was directed down on the propeller and the boat would barely make 20 mph. Is there a lot of bubblie water around the propeller area. Propeller catching to much air? Just a thought!

Absolutely agree with johnny on this. However, there is a simpler way. No need to remove the prop to mark it. Simply mark the prop NUT and an aligning mark on the prop. If the hub spins, the hub, shaft and nut all turn at the same time, and the marks will no longer align. Nice part is, you can check by tilting the motor out of the water and looking. No off and on with the prop.
May 31, 2022 at 3:41 pm #260763Thanks for all the tips. Prop is off currently. This particular prop’s hub (brass hub, aluminum prop) protrudes almost an inch out of the prop, so I put the hub in the vise and tried to turn the blades and couldn’t. Hub turns in the vise a bit because I’m afraid to damage the brass hub by cranking the vise too tight. the hub seems like it’s in there pretty solidly. Again, it ‘s brand new NOS prop that’s only been sitting on a shelf for 64 years or so, lol.
If it’s not a spun prop, what’s the next most likely cause that would have the same symptom?
