      Has anyone here made one out of metal? Part number 0329197.  Expensive little part for what it is and I belive it could be made out of a piece of aluminium ground down. Any reason it shouldn’t work? I have replaced a few on some of my old Johnson and Evinrudes and have a Evinrude that needs one now and figure I could just make it.

        The tangs on these pins tend to break when the mag plate is tight and the throttle is twisted hard. So, I’ve made them out of 3/8″ round Acetal plastic (Delrin).  Without a mill, I set them up in the lathe and used a cutter to get the tangs right. Since they slide up and down in the aluminum throttle gear, making them out of aluminum might be a bit harsh as a plastic pin should  wear out before the slots on the aluminum gear do. Just my  two cents.

          I had one in a old parts motor in good shape but I think I will use it as a guide and go ahead and make up a few. I belive my local Menards sells the delrin rod so next time there I will have to check. Thanks for the idea!

            At one time they were made of metal.  I run across a metal one every now and then.  Maybe brass?  Maybe an after-market product back in the day?

              I made one from aluminum with no problems. kept well lubed.

                I have a 1955 Johnson 5.5 and it is all metal. One piece throttle arm so thats what made me think of useing aluminum.

                    retiredoz-Thanks for the offer on that but for now I will see how making up a few goes. I have good ones now in all my motors but would like to have a spare or two.  I picked up a 3/8 inch aluminum rod and see how that goes. They should be a bit stronger and as long as I keep them well greased I don’t think there will be much wear.  Seems every old motor I pick up at least one of the ears is broke.

                      just a though how about making a pin to replace the broken tabs? Roll pin?

                        Not sure about a roll pin but that would probably work. Just drill threw the plastic thats left in there. I just went out to the garage and made 2 out of the aluminum rod and only took 20 minutes, I will have to see how they hold up if I have another break or pick up another motor with a broken one.
