So I have a head scratcher. Ive gone through about 20 of the old 18-20-25’s this winter, and have found two gearcases where part #6 on this link http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1964&hp=18&model=18402&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Lower+Unit+Group

has been sitting in one of the gearcase voids. How is this getting loose, and do I really need to pull the powerhead and replace it?

I dont have an exhaust housing in front of me (at bingo), but doesnt this just deflect water from the powerhead more down the exhaust, restricting what we see out the blubber hole?

I suspect it also helps prevent ‘stuff’ from getting into the cylinders via the exhaust ports when themotor isnt running…perhaps lessen noise?

Interesting. Never seen one come off before.

I believe they are a simple necessity, as the hole was needed for manufacturing, then the plate was added to block it?

        Perhaps Im wrong.

I think it restricts the amount of exhaust going out the idle relief passage so it doesn’t become the main exhaust outlet. Not really necessary for the motor to run but it is there for a reason. The 50’s classics had tubes on the plate and yes, they would occasionally come loose to. If you clean the threads and use a bit of Loc Tite, it won’t go anywhere.

Like a noisy muffler if it is missing.

Well, be thankful, in a way, that it fell off. On salt water motors, I’m not sure TNT would get those screws out.

              Long live American manufacturing!
