If it’s the tank I think it is, make sure you also get a new gasket. The pick up assembly sits in a pocket on top of the tank. The gasket splits; then, when it rains, water goes right into the tank. Those tanks used to give us fits and we would switch them for something else, most of the time. When you cut them (with a HAND saw, not a spark-producing electric one!!) ) horizontally, they do make great drain pans…..

          Long live American manufacturing!

IMO these tanks suck (water, literally). As noted, the pickup sits in a pocket on the top of the tank and tends to rotate and loosen. It’s not obvious to me how to make a reliable seal. Anybody know? (I think the tanks are polyethylene and nothing will reliably stick.)

Sure they warp, crack and leak, but they are guaranteed not to rust. . . 😆

I got a 6 hp Johnson that had water in the pump, the lines, the crankcase, the carb…. Rusted up and basically ruined. It didn’t seem that submergence was the story. I was puzzled until I looked closely at the plastic tank it came in with. A nice little motor ruined and I doubt the people who had it ever knew why.
