Back in the day, you could go to an auto parts store and buy a little tube of special cam lube, then put a little dab of it ahead of the points rubbing block. Recon they still sell that stuff?

They also used to give you a little capsule of it with new points. I could tell a story about that, but I won’t

Open those tubes and lower them over the points post, before dropping down the points. That grease is thin(ish), think It would splatter on the points and foul them if you put it on the cam. I could be wrong. I see so many guys over oil their mag plates, and it ends up fouling the points, that im over anal about too much grease.

Heh, I just googled cam lube and all I got was camshaft lube. I reckon we are getting too dang old. Anyhow, I found this:

BTW, I totally agree, excess lube is one of the main causes of ignition problems.

EDIT: As I remember it, you were supposed to use a ball of lube half the size of a match head.

I don’t think the oiler wick is absolutely neccesary as a light coating of grease on the cam worked for years in automotive distributors and they ran for thousands of miles between tune ups. Not a specific number of hours as an outboard maintenance schedule is. Save your $36 and invest it in some synthetic TCW III instead.

Well thank you to Chris_p and Oldtimer, I took Mumbles advice and just applied a very light coating of grease supplied to the cam and we will see what comes of it..
