Yep, right on the money!June 9, 2018 at 10:42 pm #77730I can’t speak for that one specifically, but those 12 HP West Bend/Elgins are really fun motors to run. 12HP and I believe they weigh less than 60 pounds. Lots of power and pretty easy to work on, too. If came upon a good one and the price was right, I would snap it up. They are almost homely enough to be cool looking, too. That one is the economy model. They also made a keyed version where you could lock them down into a lower HP to operate on HP-restricted water bodies or to slow them down if operated by a youngster.
JPJune 10, 2018 at 1:58 am #77735Thanks for the replies. Not sure if it’s on my "wish list", but it
does have that "oddball, cool" factor!Prepare to be boarded! June 10, 2018 at 3:14 am #77738These motors have an attractive power to weight ratio. The weak point is the starters. The pinions are hard to find and the spring inside is quite expensive. Best to be gentle. And if you open the gearcase make sure the snap ring is fully seated when you are done. June 10, 2018 at 10:02 am #77741I had one. What a great runner it was! I was sorry to see it go, in one of my rare moments of a sensible purging. Long live American manufacturing! It also came with two OMC fuel tanks. Here it sits on my 1953 Alumacraft. Boat is rated for 12hp. I may give them a call tomorrow.Nice looking motor. Does it say "Commando" on the side?
