I’m pretty sure it was built by McCulloch (chain saws) and labeled Elgin for sale by Sears stores. Some models also came with Tillotson carbs.

I can see the data plate hiding behind the front carrying handle. Give us the numbers and we can be more specific.

I have some information on a 1960 Scott/McCulloch 12hp outboard with regards to the Carter carburetor. Sears sold Elgin motors made by Scott/McCulloch during late 1950’s to 1960s.

Better information and guidance can be given if you take a picture and post on the forum of the Model/serial plate on the carry handle/

              Cheers,
              Cajun

These motors were built by the McCulloch Corporation but since McCulloch had bought out Scott-Atwater in 1956 and retained the Scott name, it can get a bit confusing. McCulloch dropped the Scott and Scott-McCulloch brands in ’63, Firestone in ’59, Wizard in ’64, and both the McCulloch and Elgin lines in ’67 when they went bust.

Here’s a PDF with some info on your motor.
