I came by a 1959 12hp Gale. What’s the difference between it and my 10hp 1957 Evinrude, other than fuel pump. Thanks

It’s basically that, a parts bin motor to try to fill a gap without competing with the main brands too much. Someone who can’t afford an 18 might want something bigger than a 10.

I have the Gale 12D18 as having a 2.25" bore and stroke (17.89 cubic inches– 0.67hp/ci)
and 1957 Sportwin as having a 2.375" bore and 1.875" stroke (16.61 cubic inches– 0.6hp/ci)

          Pre-1954 Gale 12’s had 19.94ci displacement and were the ancestors of the 14hp & 15hp Evinrude Fastwins…

The Gale 12 is very related to the Evinrude & Johnson 15hp. Very related, but not absolutely same as. It is a smaller bore and has plain bearings, not roller bearings. But like their J/E cousins, they run well and are very reliable. I had a ’56 Gale 12 Deluxe (remote tank model) that I bought brand new back in the day, and learned to ski with it. I put lots of fun hours on that motor.

I have a 1956ish Gale-built Goodyear. Great motor. Very reliable. Easy to work on and repair. Trustworthy.

I have a 1956 12 hp gale buccaneer and love it.
