I found an Arkansas Traveler UT-14 in a scrap heap. On the rating plate it says the maximum HP for the boat is 17.2 HP. Was a 17.2HP motor ever made? Any thoughts on the seemingly unusual rating?
The boating industry must have a magic formula to rate the maximum
horse power for each boat design, based on length, width, depth,
materials used, engineer design, and wishful thinking!
Years ago….when I had my Crosby boat rated by the DOT they needed about 10 meaurements, boat type etc… and came up with a HP number . just slap a 15hp on it so insurance companies will no excuse not to pay up in case of a mishap.
The Fiberglassics library has a pretty good sampling of spec sheets for Arkansas Traveler boats. I looked at a few and did not see the 17.2 listing. Seems like they varied between 16 and 18 on your model. Curious as to how/why your boat got marked the way it was.
I think this is a very early boat. At least we haven’t found a lower serial #. Also, I found (and purchased) a brochure on the boat that does list the 17.2 HP max.
I also had never heard of a 17.2 HP motor. However, we did come across a Kingfisher Captain Lowline outboard rated at 17.2 HP. But other than a mention of it, I can find nothing on the brand or when it was made.
