Back on the old forums (circa 3 years ago), I vaguely recall a discussion on slight differences in the starter brackets between early evinrude and johnsons (in particular, the 18hp’s).
This past weekend at Rocky Hill CT (swap meet), I had a fellow member ask me this question, but could not recall. I’m racking my brain to recall if it was a slight difference in where the bosses lined up, or the distance the starter was held on the bracket?
I want to say by the early 60’s it was pretty much a universal part, say, with the introduction of fuel pumps?
Help….?
March 27, 2017 at 12:05 am #54984I think the only difference is where the rubber grommets to hold the hood on are located. Evinrude on the side, Johnson up front. I could be wrong though.
March 27, 2017 at 1:12 am #54991Bolt spacings were different on the 6 Volt starters & brackets. And some had silencers, some didn’t.
March 27, 2017 at 7:13 pm #55043I’ll throw this out there. Not all 6V starters are created equal either, the green bracket is the original starter to my 1955 RDE-17 which I couldn’t get to work correctly so I bought the other one in the red bracket which is off of a 1956 RDE-18. Both are 6 volt starters but the size difference is obvious. Thankfully all of the bolt hole mounting locations and rubber grommet mounting locations were the same so the swap worked out.
March 27, 2017 at 8:58 pm #55047The later (70’s) bracket, some of them anyway also had a relief in them where the starter solenoid bolted on. Have only seen that bracket a few times and it was on factory Estart motors.
March 27, 2017 at 9:03 pm #55048The motors I’m talking about are circa 1957-76, not the 32 C.I. block ones post 1977. I am talking about the 22 C.I. block 18’s, which are the same 20hp motors (late 60’s), and then souped up to 25hp in ’69.
March 27, 2017 at 11:17 pm #55050Are you speaking of manual or electric start brackets?
March 27, 2017 at 11:23 pm #55051electric, apologies, the Port electric start bracket.
March 28, 2017 at 2:40 am #55072The electric starter is on the Starboard. I find it illuminating that the 18 and 25/30 horse motors have the same starter bracket bolt locations. . . 😀

March 28, 2017 at 3:00 am #55075Ok guys, are we talking about the same thing here? The 18-20-25 22 C.I. Motors have the starter on the port side.
I believe there is a small difference in the early start brackets between evinrude and johnson; that was my initial question.
Sorry if I have been unclear.
