I’ve had this Rudder Twin in my collection for close to 3 years now.
I got it cheap, because it must have been run without oil at some point.
The piston rings are completely friction welded to the cylinders and completely unusable. I’ve tried every imaginable method to unstick them, but nothing. Other club members have also suggested wall decor.
Would it worth saving this one? I believe that it is a very early production, as the Serial is #F1745. No other numbers on the tag. I would need to find a powerhead, and rebuild the timer and coil.
Any advice is appreciated..
Thanks!

1959 Mercury Mark 6AJanuary 6, 2026 at 11:08 am #303088Heat is your friend, remove the powerhead from the tower, recheck for stuck rings, yes I have seen a gear case stuck making previous owner think it was the powerhead. Also had a recoil stuck making owner think motor was junk…
Remove exhaust manifold. Spray or pour mystery oil of your favorite flavor, Kroil, PB Blaster, 50/50 Acetone/ Transmission fluid. drop that in the exhaust ports, not quite full, then apply heat, MAP gas is best. Heat it until the oil starts boiling. stop and let it get cold…repeat until the piston moves, you can turn the powerhead over and drop fluid in the bore thru the spark plug holes and do that as well heat it until the fluid boils. I spent weeks nightly on a powerhead.. it lost and now is a running motor. I have yet to NOT have this succeed.. 6 motors saved and counting. Keep a fire extinguisher handy, but that should be in everyone’s shop that uses fire makers… You will in time see the fluid “drain” that is a great sign…. the fluid will “evaporate” due to heat…just add more.
Good luck

January 6, 2026 at 1:19 pm #303091Richard,
Great advice. Will try this when it gets a bit warmer outside.
The photos were prior to me digging into find the issue, and the L/U spins perfectly, no noises either.
I was able to get the pistons off of the crank, and it appears to me that one of the rods is bent, as it has a slight crack in it, and it visibly bent. The other seems OK.
The motor has fallen over prior to me owning it, and broke two of the tank mounting castings straight off of the casing for the block.
Do you know any good sources for parts? I’d like to find another powerhead to use as a donor for mine **trying to keep it as original as possible.
Thanks!

January 6, 2026 at 7:09 pm #303104Have you tried the grease gun trick to get you motor unstuck? The simple hydraulic pump can put a lot of pressure on things.

January 6, 2026 at 9:20 pm #303109What are you asking for the “G” parts motor? I’ve got a friend who has a G in need of some parts as well.

January 7, 2026 at 8:10 am #303116That would be awesome. I will check around and see who is heading that way this summer. I may be able to make it, not sure yet. Photos would be great, take your time!

January 8, 2026 at 10:07 pm #303167FWIW, the model “F” Elto is worth saving if at all possible. They only made 999 of them. The tank on your motor has the filler cap moved to the rear, whereas all other model F’s that I’ve seen had the filler in the front starboard corner (its one of the tells that its an original F). So your tank is likely a replacement.
Can you post some pictures of the broken sections of the crankcase? it might still be salvageable although it would probably take a lot of work. I’m not able to picture the breaks because you said two mounting points were broken off but I’m only aware of one long mounting lug that sticks out the rearward side of the crankcase.. Those tanks mount with bolts at three locations, one in the back and two on top or near the front. Curious to see what happened with yours

January 9, 2026 at 9:18 am #303170I agree with Chris. The F is worth saving but you’ll probably have a challenge finding the parts, — but, who knows! I searched for 20 years looking for the gear drive and mount for an early Caille RBM and as luck would have it, a vendor with a table of boat hardware had one mixed in with the hardware! He had no idea what it was. It had the gears and everything.
I have # 1197 which is the 197th one and it is all original….
Good luck, and don’t quit trying!
