Still trying to get the top rings free on both pistons…soaking piston tops in OMC engine tuner for 2 days…rings still not coming loose…am taking it slow not wanting to break the rings. So while they’re soaking thought I would tackle cleaning the fuel tank and shutoff valve. Unthreaded the shutoff valve…. disassembled it and cleaned( should work fine now), but when I removed it from the tank there was no filter of any kind in the tank…looked in the inner sanctum parts manual and I find in the parts description a screen and bushing listed but no pics and the service manual doesn’t mention anything. Does anyone know if there is suppose to be a filter in the tank? Also I sandblasted to cylinders and cleaned/routed out the cracks like PM-T2 did and JB Welded the cracks and followed what Putzer advised in giving the cylinder the dimpled look ( came out GREAT). My plan is to get the motor mechanically sound and running then do a cosmetic resto. Tubs…your restos are TOPS!!!! I’ll end up doing many of the things you did but don’t have the know how to do alot of what you do so I’ll stay within my capabilities. Should turn out nice and will sit next to my KE4 and Handitwin in my man cave 🙂

February 5, 2023 at 11:48 pm #272400Got the rings loose but ended up breaking one of them…and while cleaning up the driveshaft tube I noticed a crack 3/4 of the way around the tube just above the top gearcase screws in the tube and the bolting area for the cav plate. Now that I’m this far into it I have a donner A-25 that I stole a piston ring from and now the driveshaft casing assembly. The odd thing is that the A-25 tube doesn’t have the upper screws going into the top of the aluminum gearcase housing…did they possibly find that you didn’t need them for the A-25 and up? Should I drill new holes like the old one? Someone has definitely been in this motor because one of the 1/4-20 bolts that hold the crankcase to the driveshaft casing was stripped and only holding by a couple of threads…heli coil time! Gosh…I hope the “surprises” stop coming at some point. Hope it runs good after all this work.
