Working on a Folding “N,” does anyone know how common these are? I find the style a bit more appealing than the later design, but I can’t seem to get this one to stay running very long. Runs maybe 3-5 minutes at a time, I can’t get it to open up even after cleaning the carb. Always starts right up, though. Any ideas? Also looking for ideas of how to clean this one, I’d love to keep it original, just cleaner.

      Thanks!

When running, does the float pin stay down? If not, there is a fuel flow issue to the carb.

Does fuel leak out of the carb? If so, the float pin and/or seat need to be addressed.

Have you checked the condenser with a real condenser tester?

Do you hear any squeaking or hissing when it runs? (That is, are the crankcase gaskets intact?)

            Tom,

On this motor, you cannot see the float pin for some reason.

There is a cap over the top of it, that appears to be bronze or brass.

No hissing/squeaking, and the only time fuel leaks out of the carb is when the motor is laid down with the fuel on, or is tilted into the boat.

Not sure how to test the condenser, I don’t have a condenser tester.

When the motor runs, it just sputters and kind of “chugs” along, and I have checked my spark in both cylinders.

It appears to be healthy spark, and I also cleaned the plugs, which looked fine as well.

It was hard to start, but once running, would run at slow speed regardless of where the throttle and timing are.

              Richard,

I cleaned out the tank, and tested fuel flow even before putting it on the boat.

Here is a link to a video I’ve done on the folding N. Should answer some of your questions. – https://youtu.be/i9NiPC126fY?si=zPQGp4LrEpOQPOIp

                  Tubs,

That is quite the motor you have restored. I hope to do the same with mine.

I was surprised with the fact that its possible there’s less than 100 that remain functional.

What did you use to clean yours, and get to the copper plate? Mine is filthy.

                  I also have a Tillotson carb, #MS126A.

I have any number of things I use cleaning up motors. It depends on what your trying to remove. A guy I met, who is also into these, told me about the copper cylinder paint. Hard starting and no power may indicate low compression. Try it out of the water and see if it speeds up. Your carb number comes up as being for a homelite product from 1946-47. Take another look at the number. There is a video to mine running . Does your carb look like mine? I feel this carb is too big for the size of the power head IMO. This motor, while cool, is just a collection of parts used on other motors. Its a guesstimate on my part that there may only be 100 remaining, not a fact. Video Link. – https://youtu.be/XPXjFZcMOl8
