Today I purchased a few outboards (about which I will have other topics on). One is what I am fairly sure to be a 1929 Speeditwin 20 HP. In overall good shape, with the manifold being intact(although the tiniest bit loose), the tank with very little dents, good overall shape, and spark. While I very much love the look of this motor, I can only run up to 17 ish horsepower motors on any of my boats(I don’t trust anything bigger than a Merc super 10 or similar), so I will most likely not be keeping the Speeditwin. The motor apparently runs(I may or may not check this but it has spark at a minimum) but had some carburation issues with the main jet or something like that. I may or may not get around to looking into it more because I have a lot of projects at this time and not enough time to complete them, and this brings me to the main question, which is how much might it be worth? As stated, its in good shape with spark and possibly runs with carb work. Compression is decent and I will check for numbers tomorrow if I find time.

March 28, 2026 at 10:19 pm #312617That doesn’t look like a 1929 lower unit on it. ’29’s used a much smaller exhaust vent in the foot.
If you’re not going to divulge what you paid for it, then I won’t be able to give you an honest answer as to whether or not you paid fairly for it or if you got taken.
The locking feature was so the motor can’t turn while the operator was trying to pull the rope. You’re supposed to unlock it after the motor starts.
