I just ran this motor for the first time in 5 years and it was overheating.  Probably other issues but my friend was wondering about the bronze prop?  He said it’s a racing prop and that it may not be drawing water well because the holes are in near the shaft. I found the aluminum prop with the holes further out.  They look identical otherwise.  I think I’ll try the aluminum prop to see if it cools better.

I can’t find any identification numbers or letters on either prop.  What prop did Evinrude recommend for this motor in 1929?

I’ve got one out in the shop but I’m not certain it’s got the original prop on it. I’ll check and get back to you tomorrow if that helps. If the one on mine looks like yours I’d say they have the right props?

I would agree that.the aluminum prop with the
holes further out should cool much better.
Having the holes further out has the water
passing over them faster creating more vacuum.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Well the prop I have “laying with” the speeditwin U Is this one but it’s a 3 blade prop so obviously not original either

I think the three blade prop was OEM, the two blade for racing.  Before you try swapping props, make sure the compression nuts on the water tubes are the correct ones.  They were not current standard compression nuts that are available today.  If the original ones were replaced with common hardware store fittings, there will be an air or water leak in the system and it won’d draw water correctly.  If the nuts are brass, they are likely incorrect.  This is a very common problem on the ’28 and ’29 Fleetwins, Fastwins, and Speeditwins.

Thanks for the input, guys.  I found the parts list and it show a three blade prop as the standard and two blade racing prop as an option.

Tom, it looks like I have old and “new” cooling lines.

I would be very skeptical that the brass nuts are holding tight.  Don’t try to torque them any more, it’ll just ruin the threads on the aluminum fitting.  I used to pick up water tubes that had the original nuts on them, but I’ve used up all I had.

Try loosening the nuts to see how tight they are.  If they are tight, they are probably the correct ones.  If they are loose, or the threads on the fitting are buggered up, you’ll need to find the correct ones.

I went through the same issue with a ’29 Fastwin I still have.  Aluminum tubing is available from McMaster Carr, but the nuts are not.

Okay, who’s got a bag of aluminum nuts?
