Hey everyone! I recently acquired a 1929 Johnson K-45 in excellent original condition and am trying to get it started. I cleaned out the fuel tank and carburetor, sanded/gapped the points, and gapped the old spark plugs to 0.032”. It has spark and is getting fuel to the carburetor, but I cannot get the motor to even sputter. What should I check first? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Congrats on your acquisition. I like those big opposed Johnsons.
Since this motor has been around a long time, a few checks are in order before running it.
As Tubs suggested above please check to make sure the motor is timed correctly. They can be put back together 180 degrees out.
Also check through the spark plug hole the the “sloped” side of the piston is towards the exhaust.
Its also a good idea to replace the capacitor (aka condensor) in the mag as they are old and have or will fail.
I have a good running P35 that starts well with the mag lever at the 530 position and the carb needle about 1 turn open and carb lever to choke. Once started you can lean out the carb for best running.
The cooling system on this motor is a pressure vacuum so it will probably not cool in a test barrel. Hope this helps.
