      Can anyone give me some assistance on the procedure for setting the choke on my 1930 A-50? I am familiar with the opposed A carbs but this one has a different barrel valve am not sure just how to go about it. Actually the carb itself overall is just a bit different and I can’t find any info on it. Did a search here and in the Old Iron Library with no results. Thanks for any input!

        Do you have the correct carb? IIRC the A-50 carb is just a sideways version of the earlier version. It should have a setting C for the choke. The sets crews are for setting the low idle once the motor is tuned up.

          Tom: I am sure I have the correct carb. Need to know the correct adjustment for the barrel valve when in the choke position.

            OK, good, looks like the right carb. Later models had a synchronized carb and mag.

            Just install the lever with the setscrew in the notch of the throttle shaft and you should be good to go.

            You might want to install the barrel first, then the spring, then the cover. Once all that is in place, install the lever so that there is some friction in the detent position, but the lever still moves easily. That is, don’t slide down the shaft all the way before tightening the setscrew.

              UPDATE!! I got the A-50 started on the stand, seems to run OK but I think I need to have a look at the points. Will give it a look see tomorrow and see how things are. Looking forward to getting it on the boat for a true test. The A-50 sure is a smooth running motor compared to the older opposed A’s. 😀
