wondering if anyone can give me a part description or part number for the little collar that sits on top or around the timer on 31 light twin I’ll post serial number and a pic of the broke part. I just aquired this motor and when I unloaded it out of my truck I heard this part hit the floor. I have 2 of these motors from different years and hoping to be able to make one of them a runner and while we’re at it, anybody have a parts motor with this available?

thanks tubs I believe you are correct. I remember this on my other engine. I know their are several different varieties of these, not a one fits all for sure. It’s what operates the timer, correct?

The aluminum timer strap was used on the later models like yours.  If your timer strap is broken, it may be due to a frozen timer.  Check the bushing in the timer to see whether it’s swelled up and/or cracked.

Checking the straps on my 1929 Lightweight and my
1928 Speedster they seem identical. Notice both are
homemade replacements. Later straps were made of
the same pot metal as the timer bushing. This stuff
cracks and get brittle over time. Earlier motors have a
brass timer bushing and a brass strap like the picture
I posted above. I have a 1925 Ruddertwin with the
brass strap but I would have to dig it out. The straps
for sale I told you about are the earlier brass ones and I
think there is a good chance they will fit. I you decide
to go that way I wouldn’t wait too long as you cant tell
how long he will have them.
If you decide to make some be sure to include this
hole. It takes oil that passes the upper main bearing
and transfers the oil to the notched shaft in the timer
                to lubricate it.

I appreciate the interest tubs. If I remember correctly my other lightwin has the brass one and also has a timer with the new bushing. I think I trashed the carb on that one by trying to refresh the poppet springs. ( Thinking it surely couldn’t hurt, well I think it did as I could never get it to run) so I may see if the timer and arm will fit the new motor and see what happens…..one day

Bit I will check to see about the new brass strap, just to have it. Maybe I’ll come across a carb one day
