New to AOMCI and new to the addiction. I have been tinkering with a 1931 – 1932 Evinrude Fisherman. Couple of questions.
1) Is the round plate behind the propeller an aftermarket trolling plate?
2) Is the plate on the top of the mag correct?
3) Any good leads on a lower unit that has a skeg still intact.I picked up this in a few boxes and got it back together. Soldered new plug wires, cleaned the point, and soaked the carb for hours to loosen up some hard debris. After re-assembling it started on the second pull. I am going to be removing the rubber boots on the plug wire ends and using the older copper fittings to look a bit more correct.
Thank you for your help with these questions.

November 3, 2021 at 7:05 am #249094Good morning, and welcome to the club. I hope you have better luck fighting off the old iron addiction than I had!
To answer your questions – it is most likely a trolling attachment on the prop, there were a lot of different ways they used to reduce/impede the thrust generated by the propeller and that is one of them.
secondly, check with a guy named Matt Penn for lower unit parts, he and his father Doug have been supplying AOMCI club members with parts for vintage motors.
Hope it helps.

That motor should have an above-water exhaust on it. Judging by the curve of the brass exhaust pipe, I’d say that the muffler and pipe were taken from a 1934 Evinrude Fisherman and retrofitted to this motor.
What is the model number on the ID plate that should be riveted to the transom bracket? Your motor looks like a model 401 Elto Lightweight to me, but knowing the model number would remove all doubt.

I believe the Model 401 is a battery ignition.
The Seaking Model 400 had a magneto as well
as not having the anti-cav plate that Tom has
pointed out. If it should be a Model 400 the
underwater exhaust would be from another
motor as pm-t2 has mentioned. Not sure if
the tiller is correct on this example pictured.

what you have.

November 5, 2021 at 12:51 pm #249172Tubs, Tom, and PM, thanks for all your feedback. I was scratching my head as well. I reached out to Matt @ theoldoutbaord for parts and we identified the model number stamped into the case is 4911643. This would make the motor a 1935 SeaKing with an Evinrude tank. The exhaust looks to be correct or maybe not?
I assume that OMC decided to market these units through MW and use up the old parts they had from the early 30’s?
Thanks for all your help and appreciate the transfer of knowledge/experience.
