      Hi all.

This is my first Johnson OK-55 so I am stuck before I start, so to speak. I don’t want to “trial and error” my way through this one.

I have the lower unit that was on the motor, with parts missing. The lower part of the driveshaft as well as the prop drive shaft are still in the l/u and don’t seem to want to budge beyond wiggling slightly. The shafts are not corroded or rusted in tight. Just can’t figure out exactly how they are held in.

Upon acquiring another l/u, I took a closer look. At the top of the l/u where the driveshaft goes into the l/u, I see a bearing race(?) brass fitting. I am sure there is a tool or special way to remove this, if that piece is what is holding the driveshaft in place. I am fairly certain that once i can lift the driveshaft out of the housing the prop shaft will come out.

The “correct assembly/disassembly instructions” as well as a blow apart of the l/u would be of great help.

under the washer is the brass fitting i refer to. thanks.

It looks like the upper driveshaft need not be removed.  Just remove the rear pump case etc and slide the prop shaft assy out.  It may be tight on the front double row 5202 double row ball bearing preventing easy removal.  Heating the gearcase especially by the bearing may be the answer to easy removal.   Notice that there is a large brass ‘cup’ threaded onto the rear of the prop shaft gear.  I suggest you leave the cup alone.  There is a strong spring inside. If the cup cracks or breaks, you need another one.
