As I was cleaning the prop shaft this morning, I discovered
that there was a heavy duty spring hidden inside of the
prop gear assembly. At first, I thought it was to allow slippage
of the prop if one hit something, but in looking further, I see
that the prop gear is keyed to the shaft and therefore
could not slip on the prop shaft. Perhaps the gear could
slip on the key disengaging the drive shaft and prop gear,
but that doesn’t seem like a good idea to me!

The spring affair does put tension on the threaded thrust / end play
cap, but would seem like an over-kill just to keep the cap from
unscrewing. The actual end play of the prop shaft would
be adjusted with the big plug screw in the end cap (not shown).

What’s your theories on the purpose of the spring?

I believe I’m finished making the new threaded aluminum cap
to replace the cracked, cast bronze one. Lots of monkeying
around adjusting the OD and depth of the new cap on the lathe so
the end cap will seat on the gear case. I’ll cross my fingers
the first trip on the lake!

The big steel gear itself isn’t keyed to the shaft but the brass cone inside it is. This is a cone clutch system and the steel gear is a seperate piece and is held in place by the taper, something like a flywheel. The spring applies the needed pressure so they wont slip, until you ht a gator. The gear might be stuck on the cone and will need some persuading to break it free and I like to lube the tapers before reassembling them.

Thanks Mumbles! I guess I should have asked, but I didn’t
think there were any Johnson parts diagrams that old!
The clutch system makes sense now, but I buttoned it
all up last night, so we won’t know if the cone slips
until I hit a big Muskie……… no gators around here!
