I put the magneto back on the subject project yesterday,
and proceeded to adjust the points. Found that it
was a pain in the "leg" to do so.
Forget about any form of synchronization of the pair
of points at TDC, I was just having trouble getting
them set close to .020 open.
The points cam is on the flywheel, so points adjustment
must be done with the flywheel on.
There’s no good leverage point to gently move the
points through the flywheel opening. What’s the proper way of setting these points, and do
you attempt to sync them at all?Prepare to be boarded!

Works the same as the OMC tool and it’s repro made for the 50’s vintage motors. If your familiar with that tool, do this the same way using a multi meter. Do you have two holes in flywheel? If so one of them will line up for adjusting when the marks are lined up. This way they will be synchronized.
May 5, 2018 at 4:38 pm #75398Squire, thanks for reminding me about the marks……. I think
you mentioned them when I was working on the A-80.
I’ll have to look and see if I have them.
My flywheel only has the one hole.
My biggest problem is getting the points to move to my
liking through that hole…….. usually not enough,
or too much, lol.
At least it looks like I have good spark, so I"m off to
a good start.Update- reset the points using the timing marks
and my buzz box, which was simple to set up
using the kill switch terminals in the mag plate handle.
Got the points set to fire 180 deg. apart on crank rotation
now. Before, by just setting both points at .020, the
flywheel traveled a quarter inch past one timing mark
before that cylinder’s points started to open.
The first set of points I set at 020, and the second
set ended up about .025 to get the ignition timing synchronized.
Hopefully that’s close enough?Prepare to be boarded!
May 6, 2018 at 2:10 am #75433That’s better than close enough, that perfect. It’s right where the factory wanted it. The gap distance really doesn’t matter, once the points are open they are open. Sounds like your going to have a good runner with this one. Can’t wait for the video, I know one is coming.
May 6, 2018 at 12:24 pm #75442I sure hope there’s a "running" video of the K50!
All that is left, is to clean and shine the prop,
try to repair the broken ear on one transom mount
screw, and repair the gas tank.
Gas tank has one broken mounting ear, a couple of
dents, and needs a polishing whiz, which I’m not!Prepare to be boarded!
May 6, 2018 at 3:07 pm #75449Those ears always seem to have at least one broken. My K80 needs one too. I think Art Decalb has some repro cast, or just weld on a new ear.
