Hi everyone. Hoping for more info on my grandfathers motor befor my sons and I start to restore. I believe it is a 1934 2.2hp but I have not been able to find another quite like it and would sure love to get the correct decals on it. The Serno is 4001360. I have found others but mine has some differences. There is no metal lable below the tiller nor are there any holes where rivits would have been to hold it. The number is hand stamped into the block. Another difference is the fly wheel. No markings at all. All the other similar examples had some marking in the flywheel plus most have the gas cap in the middle. In addition, I need a rubber tiller handle along with the small lever that adjusts the timing (I think). Any help would be appreciated. I included a few pics. Thanks in advance for any advice!! I have many more pics if needed.

😉December 21, 2016 at 4:30 pm #49530Good morning. The model/serial number you report is seven (7) digits, so to determine the model, you only go by the first three digits. You have a model 400 motor there, and the lack of ID on the rope sheave sort of points it towards being a Sea King. I don’t have my model-year guide handy, but I bet that is what a model 400 is, but pretty sure its a 1931 model year, and you have the 1360th motor built under that model number.
You do not have a 2.2 HP motor there, those were single cylinder models. You have the opposed twin, and for 1931 they were rated at 4 HP. If your timer lever is broken off, you either have to have a new one welded on, or else replace the magneto plate with one that isn’t broken.
Hope this helps.

December 21, 2016 at 6:55 pm #49536Thanks so much guys, makes way more sense. I actually found the twin on Doug Penn’s site with the Sea King decals on it. My kids have been bugging me for years to get this thing restored. I’m sure next I will be restoring an old wooded row boat for it to go on. Appreciated!!
December 21, 2016 at 7:27 pm #49538Wanted to do a quick follow up here. Just opened up a old box that gramps had with the motor. Inside is a piece of paper with the spark plugs stating " Wards, Sea king 4 HP plugs" Spark plugs are Wards Riverside 2C. You guys nailed it. Sorry I didn’t open the box sooner. Quite strange that 100 years ago, everyone turned to the Wards and Sears catalogue to buy and now I always turn to the internet (catalogue) to once again purchase goods. Small world.
December 21, 2016 at 7:28 pm #49539Oh ya, it also said 1931
