          Filling the gearcase.

Remove both. Fill from the bottom (drain) until it exits the vent. Install vent screw with new washer, remove fill tube from drain hole, and install drain screw with new washer.

          Done.

I found three of the similar-type plugs neither one of them can take a washer it’s just a plug that goes in one at the very bottom of the unit that I believe I was told in one post fill with grease and in those two that are on the side of the left lower unit and neither one has a space for washers just the screw type plug that goes in . By the looks of it I’m assuming that’s where the plunger type impeller is?

The DRAIN plug is removed to drain the cylinders of water before winter.
The VENT plug is removed while filling the lower unit with grease. When grease starts to come out of this vent hole, the gearcase is full.
The unmarked plug to remove for inserting grease is on the lower left side of the gearcase cover, just ahead of the prop.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Follow up question on this thread: I also have a Johnson 300. I notice the oil specs above call for SAE#40 to mix with the gasoline. Is it OK to use standard marine two-stroke (TCW) or is SAE#40 appreciably different?

                      Thanks!

I just use exactly what it calls for then I have no question as to whether I’m doing what’s correct for the motor. I’ve been running exactly what it calls for in mine and it runs better than any of my new machines so I just go with that.
