Wording on the suction feed portion of the carb, suggest that
the “high speed” needle is also the “fuel shut off”.
Even though there’s no gravity flow from the gas tank to carb,
perhaps one would want to shut off the fuel when the motor
is tipped up or laid down.If one uses the high speed needle for both uses, and you stroked
the lever to operate from “shut off” (or lean) to “Rich”, and stay
within the slot of the cowling, you’d only have about 1/4 turn open max
on the HS needle.
I discovered though, that the lever would go past “Lean” and inside the
cowling and continue to turn until it hits the inside of the cowling.
(see photos). Setting up the needle in this way gives it about 7/8
turn open in the “Rich” extent of the lever.
Anyone know if it’s meant to be set up in this manner?Prepare to be boarded!
March 25, 2021 at 8:13 pm #234998I am not at home to look at how mine is set up.
But with the needle in the “off position” could you reposition
the lever on the needle so it swings within the window while
Shutting the fuel off and still maintain the proper mixture
adjustment?
I assume the needle and seat are in good shape and
positioned correctly.Just a thought without having mine in front of me.
Respectfully,

March 25, 2021 at 9:36 pm #235012Brook, that’s kind of what I’m “shooting” for, to have optimal control within
the slider window, and if necessary, “shut off” could be with the lever under the hood.
Guess I won’t know until I try.
Is your Bendix battery operated, or magneto?
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
March 25, 2021 at 9:50 pm #235013You can’t have it shut off the fuel with the lever still in the adjustment window. That would only give you about 1/8 or less of a turn adjustment on the high speed needle. When the high speed needle is closed it should point back around the spark plug. Closing the needle would only be necessary if you are transporting the motor on it’s side. Also, the manual states to advance the high speed lever to the fuel rich position when starting and to back off to the middle position when warm. I find this is necessary on my Bendix as it likes that extra bit of fuel at start up.

March 26, 2021 at 8:35 pm #235071Hello Buc,
So I had a chance to look at my 3 Bendixs tonight the one that I had gone through many years ago Runs well.
I looked at my notes and I did make a new needle and seat as the original looked as if the needle had been driven
Into the seat hard. ( possibly attempting to shut the fuel off over the years of the motors life) the new ones I made
does shut the fuel off but right at the limits of the window and still allows me to dial the motor in once running.
I did take a look at my other 2 that I have that are in as found conditions and I do have to move the lever past the
window to shut off the fuel. I did take a look at the needle and seat and as I expected the same condition as the original
Damaged one I had replaced during the restoration of mine. In any event that was my experience with mine.My three Bendixs are all magneto motors.
I am enjoying watching you progress through the project as it is taking me back to when I restored mine.
Keep up the great work.Respectfully,
March 26, 2021 at 8:40 pm #235072Brook, Hopefully the next “go around” with the Bendix will bring more joy.
If the HS lever stays within the “slot” from Shut off to Rich, that would
be only a quarter turn or less open on “Rich”.
I tried 1/4 turn open at one point, but it seemed like I was having more
fun at 1/2 turn open. I’ll keep playing.
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
