Can someone tell me what changes might have been made to the Pals, particularly to the gas tank size and filler location from 1937 on? Thanks for your replies.
I have 4 from 1937-1940, and the only real difference I can see is the size of the gas cap being slightly smaller on the later ones. Not sure exactly when the switch happened though. Everything else looks identical
The very early Pals and Scouts had the large cap at
the front of the tank as compared to the later tanks
that has the cap near the rear. My desk top with
pictures is out for repair. If no one else post any
I can take some more and post them later.

I have two from 1937(4203). Assuming the gas tanks are original to the rest of the outboard, -00267 has the gas cap located center forward (closer to the flywheel) while -01416 has the cap to the center rear of the tank. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the helpful information. What confused me was a photo I saw of a 1937 Pal with what appeared to have a slightly larger gas tank than other Pals I’ve seen. Also the gas filler cap in the two different positions as mentioned.
Hmm, all 4 of my motors have the gas cap at the back of the tank, but 2 different sizes of cap between them. Maybe the center cap was very late? I have a 1937, 1938, and 2 1940’s
Your 1937 should be model #4203
your 1938 could be model # 4253 or model # 4266.
The 1940’s should both be # 4266 with the small
cap being on the highest serial number motors as
as it was used at the end of production as you
have suspected. Always remember that a ton
of these were sold and parts did get moved around.
