Hi all. New Elto ace owner here with a couple a q’s. I have only ever worked on a 57 35hp SeaHorse before so I know very little about outboards in general. Found a a sweet Elto Ace 4205-00988 on Cl for $100. Hoping it will push the canoe around a bit. Cleaned up the carb and tank (both looked really clean to start),Shot some grease in the lower unit zerk, repaired the existing spark plug wire, had great spark and she fired right up!! But, it seems to be getting really hot maybe? There is water dribbling out the water pipe, though i’m not sure how much is supposed to be coming out. After i killed it there was steam coming out the water pipe and it just seemed super hot. I heard not to run it in a garbage can for long but it was only running 30 seconds or so. So I’m concerned its not cooling properly. The exhaust tube definitely gets really hot which seems normal, and its supposed to rotate? Watched a Youtube video showing how it rotated and realized on mine the previous owner had drilled a hole and put in a screw so it was in a fixed position. In that position the hole for the exhaust is on the side near where the water pipe is and partially open
It seems like the exhaust tube is slightly worn at the bottom and that’s just where the exhaust hole is when the exhaust tube is seated? I took out he set screw and it does rotate but I’m not sure where I want it? The gasket directly above the exhuast/waterpipe between it and the block was sizzling out a little oily liquid even, after I killed it and it was so hot.
Also there’s a small hole on the lower unit that pours a tiny bit of water out when I take it out it looks like its been beat up so I cant tell if its supposed to be there. I see the little hole on the uptube for the water pipe that looks like its supposed to drain a little.
Theres a couple youtube videos. of running and then after what with the steam and all that.

any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.June 27, 2016 at 6:27 pm #39064These motors need forward motion in the water to cool properly. It is dribbling water with the prop thrust alone in the barrel, so I’d guess it would be fine when running on a boat. The only way to know for sure is to try it. Just keep a close.eye on it until you are comfortable it is cooling OK. I’m by no mears any kind of expert on these motors though.

June 27, 2016 at 10:42 pm #39081I believe it rotates to give you the choice of exhaust underwater so it is quieter or wide open for performance.
OldBart, check the rubber grommet where the water pickup tube goes into the lower unit. if it old and cracked it will suck air and you will get less output of water. I think I heard you can find a grommet that fits it at the hardware store, maybe others can be more specific as to size and which store.
i have a HandiTwin, which is 2 cylinders, but has a similar lower unit & pickup tube. I watched your vid, from what I can see your flow looks on the low side.Edit:
Here is a video, compare your flow to this one and see if it is the same

June 28, 2016 at 12:05 am #39087Hi oldbart, I’m by no means an expert but I’ve got half a dozen small Eltos and Evinrudes from that period just not a 37, so maybe I can help?
Here’s a link to the parts list and diagrams:
http://www.austinsailor.net/manuals/ace/ace.html
While not detailed they do help.
The hole in the exhaust tube usually lines up with the water outlet (an expert will jump in and say something different 🙂 ) but I remember reading that it’s part of the pressure relief for starting. I’ll post the details if I can find them again. On later models it was riveted in place.
Your motor has a piston pump in the LU. It’s hard to tell from the youtubes but that type of pump usually has a good output and >I don’t think I’m seeing it. The pump itself is a brass or copper plunger that rides on a cam. I’d check the face of the pump for wear – especially pin holes and clean the check valve. The water tube and passages should also be clear. It think on that lower unit the water tube attached to the check valve with a flare-nut?
The Lower unit body has some drain holes to clear water when the motor isn’t immersed. From the pictures I’ve seen on line that looks to be factory but none of the pictures was high enough resolution to tell.Hope that helps – apologies if I got it wrong. Couple of pictures of the Lower unit might help if I ‘m way off base.
KevJune 28, 2016 at 3:25 pm #39135I’ve got the same motor with the same issue. My thought was the spring in the lower unit that keeps the plunger against the cam is weak and doesn’t do the job.
This is only a thought and I have not had time or found a new spring to test the theory.

June 28, 2016 at 6:16 pm #39143Thanks everyone. I pulled the lower unit apart and the uptube and pump. There was some crud in the uptube where the little drain hole and check ball were. So that was good to find. cant really tell how worn the piston or cam part on the drive shaft are really. It all looks ok, looks like 1937. there was bunch of water in the lower unit though. And I got a better pic of that hole on the LU. It’s definitely round and drilled but sorta chipped. I’m going to fire her up tonight and will report back and send pix. Thanks again.
July 7, 2016 at 3:52 am #39776Ok some closure finally. Pulled the uptube off all the way and found all kind of gunk in the water outlet… Now.. Water flows, engine cools. I think I did it. Now to restore or run it? Thanks for all your help everyone.
July 7, 2016 at 11:30 am #39787Great to hear about a success. I’d say run it for a while and see what you feel liie doing. Its yours to do with what you please. I always try to remember they are only original once, but if its ugly enough a restoration may be just what it needs. If you do restore it you’ll have a lot into it. A lot more anyway. However, if you restore it you will probably feel more connected with it and more proud of it when you run it and show it off. 😎 Thats my 0.02.
