Hello, Came into an original ’37 Scout. Have seen so many over restored outboards and just wanted to know if this is collectible or not and what can be done to it without hurting the value, if it is actually nice enough to collect. The tank still has the original decals but obviously is not perfect. The motor appears to have alot of the original silver paint, and I believe the steel exhaust tube appears original.

Let me know what you guys think

    Thank you

    Steven

They are definitely collectable.  It looks to be in OK shape, but I would not call it perfect, especially if the skeg is broken(hard to tell from pictures).    It would be a good candidate for a restoration if that is what you have in mind, but it’s your motor so you should do what you want with it.  There are undoubtedly better examples in original condition so you would not be ruining a motor in “great” original condition because it is more of an “ok” original condition.  If I had the time, I would restore it, but just fixing it to run is a lot easier and that would probably be the path I would take with it if it were my motor.  If you are the owner of the 2-3 Elto pals in the picture, you may want to consider restoring the lesser condition of the pals instead because you would know that you are keeping the better of the two in original shape if originality is important to you.  It’s your choice, but that is also something to consider.

Most would think its too rough to be considered a survivor. Exhaust pipe is a replacement. They show up on Pals from time to time. Can say if they are a factory replacement or an owner repair but most likely the latter. A look inside at the relief cut would tell. That original decal 1937 Pal sitting beside it looks to be in somewhat better condition. Good eye on the broken skeg Waunnaboat.

Thank you for the information. What does an original relief cut look like, the steel pipe has a relief cut. Even though the Scout was only made one year they still must have made a lot of them?

the ONLY reason that the exhaust pipe would likely be the original aluminum and that color is if the paint on the pipe was burned off with exhaust heat, or if a heck of a lot of carbon deposits were leaked from the engine if the seal on the top was not very good.   steel is 75% likely to be a later owner replacement because any factory replacement would probably have been aluminum just because of low cost and ease of production.  From what I’ve found from past forums, they are less common than Pals, but I suppose they would not be considered “rare”.

The highest serial Number I’ve seen on a Scout is #-04490. So at least 4500 were sold. Production may have ended at 4500 or possibly there were just a couple hundred over 4500 Scouts sold. Scout #-04490 is a fact. The rest is speculation. The top 2 pictures are a factory cut. It will be inside the exhaust manifold. It provides an above water exit for starting. The pipe should be pined as well.  I got this picture of a really nice original Scout at Tomahawk.  You may find it interesting that early “correct” Scouts, and Pals, will have the gas cap at the front of the tank. These motors will soon be 90 years old and the only source for parts have been other motors for quite some time.

It is a steel pipe and the cut out is the same as your pick.  Serial is 01787. The exhaust manifold is not pinned like the later pals.
