Have gotten back on my 1938 Handitwin that I started last year and am trying to put the gear case/water pump upper and lower housings back together and I’m running into some issues. Originally the water pump veins had worn all the way thru the lower water pump housing and I could actually see the water pump. I found another 1938 sportwin that had the same upper and lower housings ( 1938 has an exhaust outlet all its own) but it had the larger hub prop unlike the smaller hub on mine. Now to my issues…the gearcase originally on mine has prolly 3/16″ of propshaft endplay ( an awful lot) and it appears I’m missing a propshaft thrust plug and shims and it was also missing the driveshaft thrust washer. The other 1938 gear case is also missing the thrust plug and shim but it did have the driveshaft thrust washer. This gearcase also has steel gears unlike the brass gears in the original. I did find a 1940 gear case that has the thrust plug but I can’t figure out how to get it out…has anyone ever had to remove one? Are they removable? I would like to put this motor back to original…it was a good runner before I took it apart to restore and paint it. Am still working on painting the tank and flywheel polishing. Also is there anyone out there that might have the gear housing cap gasket? I’m not having a great time making one…has some VERY THIN sections. I have some ELTO part numbers but not sure if that would help.
February 27, 2022 at 9:25 am #255342I don’t have your motor, nor a parts diagram of one, therefore, photos of your
troubles may help, if you’re able to post them.
What material is the thrust plug made from? Plastic, Brass?
If you can’t get the old one out by soaking, tapping the gear case, or compressed air,
you might get by with making a new plug from round stock Delrin, or brass.Regarding the gasket, you’ll have to make your own. I find that a curved manicurist
scissors works good for cutting the inner circle. You can cut the OD of the gasket
oversize so it doesn’t rip out while installing, then once the gear case is assembled,
trim off the excess with an exacto knife.Prepare to be boarded!

Dan, Sent you a PM.
TubsA "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
February 27, 2022 at 10:00 pm #255420Thanks Buc and Tubs, using some of both of your gasket making ideas I was able to make a good gasket for this motor. I was also able to get the propshaft thrust plug out…sprayed carb and choke cleaner in the bushing to clean it well and found it to turn freely. Then took a large allen wrench …put good thick sticky wheel brg grease on the end stuck it in and the plug and two .015 shims out. The plug is a black plastic material and the shims were copper. The OD of the plug is .558 and the thickness is .095 ….I can prolly find some shim material and cut some but not sure about the plug….Buc…is that something I could hire you to make a couple for me or should I check around my area? I don’t have a lathe or the expertise to do something like that. I put the plug and shims in my original gearcase and cut the propshaft endplay WAY down…at least in half. I don’t have my dial gauges here at home so I will check it out next week at work.
February 27, 2022 at 10:46 pm #255423Dan, are you needing a different thickness plug than what you have, or
do you just want a couple of extras for future projects? If I have some
5/8″ Delrin, I could whittle you out a couple plugs. I’ll check my Delrin
supply tomorrow.Your gasket looks good!

February 27, 2022 at 11:30 pm #255424Buc, not sure if I need them any thicker…it might lessen the endplay but would make the gear contact shallower…not knowing what the factory recommends prolly just the same size. These would allow me to put the other two gear cases together for spares down the road. One of the gear cases has a broken skeg repaired (horribly…lol) and the other is a borrowed g/case. Funny thing about the gasket…after I made it I was looking on ME.com and found them for $3.00 each and I also need a merc gas cap gasket that they also have…might buy a couple just to have….@ $8.95 shipping I’ll have to try to find more things I need.
February 28, 2022 at 9:40 am #255427Dan, I have some 5/8″ Derlin and can try to make you a couple of plugs.
If you’re sure about the “OD of the plug is .558 and the thickness is .095”
I’ll make you a couple. I can’t guarantee they’ll be the exact dimension you
cite, down to the exact thousand. It might be best to make them a few
thousand “oversize” on the thickness, and you could sand them down to your
liking. Let me know for sure what you want, and PM me your address, etc.Prepare to be boarded!
March 3, 2022 at 8:44 pm #255578Buc, Thanks …got the plugs today…good thing you made me extras…I misread the caliper…it was .195 thick not .095…DUH…was able to make what I needed using two pieces. Thanks again.

Glad you made it work!

March 12, 2022 at 8:23 pm #256154A little update on the Handitwin, Everything is painted and put back together with the exception of buffing the flywheel and installing a decal set. I want to make it period correct with the decal. Dixie has a decal that is blue for the 1938 only then it appears to change to the gold decal in 1939 and up. I’m going to have to sleep on it some more but I’ll prolly go with the blue. Once I get it all cosmetically done I’ll gas it back up and tank test it to make sure everything is still running good. This is the first one I’ve actually completely restored … paint and all. I’m happy with the way it turned out!
