Found a nasty surprise when I got to the poppet valve carb on the Ace.
Anyone successfully repair a mess like this, and if so, how?Looks like a P.O. used some type of epoxy in a past repair attempt.
Thanks for any ideas. As a back up plan, I guess I need to look for another carb.

August 16, 2021 at 11:27 am #244983I’ll bet that carb was dripping when you put fuel in it!
August 16, 2021 at 4:59 pm #244998I never put fuel in it, as the spark plug wire was extra toasty.
I’m pretty sure if would have leaked though!
Just have to finish cleaning the gas tank and then the carb
is the only thing left for a test start.Prepare to be boarded!

Joe, I agree, but desperation brings innovation,
or most likely frustration!I have a box of old lawnmower carbs……. maybe
I make an adapter plate…… I’m afraid none
of them are “poppet” valve carbs though!Prepare to be boarded!

Avast Cap’n, me thinks ye needs to
set down the grog, take a few dubloons
from the chest, raise the jolly roger,
and set sail for the mainland to pillage
some scurvy dogs booty. This lily-livered
landlubber checked me coffer and alass
matie, me have none.
TubsA "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
August 17, 2021 at 8:27 pm #245046Tubs, want ad was posted yesterday. More than likely I’ll be waiting
by the photo like the Maytag repair man.
In the mean time, I’m attempting a “Red Green” repair on the old carb
so I can see if it’s going to run! …….. just have to find the duct tape!Prepare to be boarded!
August 17, 2021 at 9:15 pm #245047You might think I’m going nuts coming up with this suggestion, but going on my successful use of JB Weld,
I would be tempted to clean the broken surfaces and build the casting up and if you have the taps required,
rethread where the brass elbow is screwed in and the brass bung and filter are fittedThe float valve area wouldn’t be affected going on the photo.

PS Here we go again!
Covid has just been discovered in Auckland again after being clear for about 6 mths, so again the country is in lockdown level 4………..not sure where it came in.August 17, 2021 at 10:03 pm #245048Monte, I have an idea in progress in fixing the carb, but also found a used carb
on Ebay about an hour ago. Will go ahead and finish my attempted fix
so I can try to fire it up before the replacement carb arrives.I put a few 1/8″ NPT threads into the old fuel passage, just below the float needle.
I then threaded the end of some 3/8″ brass tubing about 1-1/4″ long to screw
into the fuel passage. On the side of this brass tubing I silver soldered
a piece of the fitting that the 3/16″ tubing from the gas tank will attach to.
On the bottom of the brass tube I threaded it to accept a cap, so one can
still install or remove the needle. After all that I silver soldered around the broken out area of the old casting
to secure the whole mess in place. Tomorrow I’ll do some “prettying up” of the
solder, and test if further sealing is needed for no leaks, or if I wasted a half of a day, lol.I finished cleaning the inside of the tank today as well, so perhaps I may
be able to see if it’s going to run soon!Prepare to be boarded!
August 18, 2021 at 2:56 am #245058I can see you have been a busy boy Buc…….looks good! Hopefully there aren’t any leaks, but if there are, I’m sure
you will be able to fix them………..it’s all good fun!
At least it will prove that the carb works until the one on ebay arrives.Interesting how the rest of the motor looks in nice condition.
