Here are 2 pics of my bowden hookup. Perhaps your cable is too short? My visible outer cable casing measures 22 inches from the exit hole on the tiller arm to the carb end. I see that a spark plug wire has gotten caught near the intake cover. I’ll have to prevent that. Note the notch on top of the intake cover which is where the cable is supposed to enter the clamp. My casing is also wrapped with tape to either prevent a short to the upper spark plug or to prevent a rattle against the hood

September 11, 2022 at 9:00 am #265859Harry, thanks for your help. You’ve inspired me to try again!
I’ll look for the proper size and left hand spiral cable first though.
If anything, my new cable was too long, and didn’t have enough
“backbone” (flimsy).
Much appreciated!Prepare to be boarded!
September 11, 2022 at 9:10 am #265860Harry, just to note, in case anyone else is wondering, when the front cover is on,
the Bowden cable wouldn’t be resting on the spark plug, as it would have to
be further to the center of the motor so the bottom of the front cover
wont pinch the cable.Prepare to be boarded!

Your thread made me aware that the twist direction of the spiral cable was critical to the proper fitment. I purchased a Dorman utility cable #55196 (choke cable), the outer sheath is the wrong twist and is smaller in diameter than the original, but the inner wire is the right diameter. I cut off a short section of the original sheath and slid a section of a brass cartridge case (17HMR) over it and soldered it on leaving the original sheath inserted only 1/2 way. I then soldered a 22 rimfire case fully over the end of the new Dorman cable and inserted that into the 17HMR case and soldered them together. You do have to remove the rims on both cases and the neck on the 17HMR along with slightly reducing the diameter of the original sheath. I now have a new smaller cable with the correct size wire mated to the original cable sheath. Works great!

September 11, 2022 at 9:52 am #265863I don’t know if this applies or even works in your situation, but it may help if the cable came out of the inboard side of the tiller. Just a thought. I don’t have your motor, but I have 4 speedifours and all four of them have cable coming out the outboard side of tiller. The original owner’s manual shows the cable exiting the tiller on the outboard side also. However the parts list diagram shows the cable exiting the tiller on the inboard side.
September 11, 2022 at 12:23 pm #265868Steve, interesting fix with your bullet casings. I have no idea what a 17HMR is, but
sure I could find one if needed!
I’ll try to contact Aircraft Spruce and see if I can get further information on their cable.
I’d like to just use the Sportfour’s original cable hardware if I can.I experiment with my new cable going out of the inboard and outboard holes,
different lengths, etc, but I never was happy with it’s operation, nor would
I trust it on the lake.
I found this photo of someone’s Sportfour, showing the cable going out the
outboard tiller hole as well. Thanks for your help and ideas!

September 13, 2022 at 5:58 pm #266012I don’t know what machining capabilities you have, but, I’ve done this in the past….Machine a part that looks exactly like the spool you refer to, but make the center bore as close in diameter as you can to whatever bowden cable you plan to use. Drill and tap the hole where the locating screw goes that locks it into the steering handle. On the opposite side, drill and tap and use a set screw to lock the bowden cable into the spool. There’s not a lot of pressure on that cable because it is also clamped at the carb end. All it does is hold the bowden cable inside the handle.
The other thing is to look for cheap parts motors like Speeditwins that are toast but have parts. Your motor looks like the one for sale at Tomahawk.
