HELP REQUIRED !
firstly greetings from the uk ! im pursuing this lonely hobby here in the uk as there are little or no collectors or information over here.
im hoping to find knowledgable people here that can help me with technical nformation so i can have a better understanding in repairing and running these old motors
my first motor in question is my 39 handitwin which i am trying to understand the workings of the lower leg
my question isdoes anyone know exactly what this hole is for on the bottom of the driveshaft tube ????

my confusion is the hole is below water level so will immediatley take in water once the engine is in the water ? so the driveshaft will be running in water whilst in use ? below the hole a way down is a possible seal and below this is the twin impeller ,so once out of the water the driveshaft tube will not drain water below the hole ,November 3, 2020 at 11:51 am #219979.

thank you once again !
I have stripped the lower unit which splits into four pieces x2 are the top and bottom cavity plate which houses a top and bottom impeller with a dividing plate inbetween the two impellers then the gearbox housing / skeg are the other two parts ,main body and the propeller shaft housing , the gearbox sits below the impeller and is sealed with a cork / leather/ felt seal at the top of the driveshaft bearing which is in fact a long bronze bush, the propeller housing has a gasket sealing it to the main geatbox /skeg housing and the propeller shaft has a cork./ felt /leather / seal . the leg drains from two holes just above the gearbox ,these hole also feed the impeller with water when submerged. this is why i asked the question in why is there a hole in the driveshaft tube allowing more water from above the impeler into this area ? and it appears it would seem on the last couple of years of the handitwin .
i have a educated guess for this hole purely as a novice on these engines , but would like my idea confirmed by someone that knows without prompting the idea 😉November 3, 2020 at 2:11 pm #219986hi tubs
