I’m not sure if an “universal OMC” coil would be a candidate for a coil
swap or not. I’m guessing your coil laminates are 5/8″? If so, they’d
have to be machined down where the OMC coil would go on.
Hopefully someone that’s tried this swap will chime in.Prepare to be boarded!

The Johnson/Evinrude coil will work. Wires out the back are kind of a pain.
Tubs.A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Thanks
Gonna give this a try. Hopefully the next post will be a vid of a running motor?

So I bought an OMC coil (3.5k or so secondary) and modified my existing 5/8” laminate to 7/16” by removing layers and cutting the sides of the part that goes through the coil just like in Tubs video. Used large vise to press on the new coil. Went on pretty well. Shaved a little bit of insulation as it came through but nothing serious.
checked the secondary after …….open🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
No idea how. Everything went as planned
How tight should it be to put it on? Slide on with out help and add a little silicon of something to hold it?
I would have never thought that these coils would be so fragile
June 14, 2022 at 9:31 am #261485In my little bit of experience, an easy “hand fit” of the coils on the laminates is okay.
It would scare me to use a press fit that requires a vice.
Silicone to hold the coil on may be okay, but a dab of clear epoxy may be better.Prepare to be boarded!

I ordered another coil (different, and hopefully more robust supplier) and I’ll file a little more off and try again. Frustrating. This is my oldest motor right now and I’d really like to get it running

Strangeness going on with this one. Removed the coil and just for kicks measured it again and it was fine. I made the laminate smaller and put it back on and it was fine. Put it all back together and put some fuel mix into the cylinder and it fired right up. I shut it down and tried the fuel/carb source and couldn’t get it going again. I’m thinking I need to change the gas in the tank again. Tank was quite rusty and I did clean it pretty well but probably needs one more cycle of cleaning along with carb and fresh fuel.
I think I’m close. Thanks for the help. This forum is great!
June 20, 2022 at 12:16 pm #261709Do you have a screen strainer in the tank, or elsewhere?
Hopefully the spark issue stay’s resolved!
Awaiting the “running” video!Prepare to be boarded!
June 30, 2022 at 8:58 am #262229So I still haven’t been able to get this thing running past the one time it fired up and had water spraying all over the place out of the bucket it was in and one other time it sputtered a bit.
The compression is 80-85. Is this low for a ’39 one cylinder? I bought a new spark plug boot and will install that tomorrow but just wondering what else I should look at?
I have spark, assuming it stays once I install the plug – I have 80-85 psi compression – and I’m putting some fuel mix in the cylinder.
What am I missing? Fuel, spark, compression – I should be touring around the lake………..
