I have a 1939 Evinrude lightfour the serial number is 9031-50001. What does the 50001 designate? There’s no way they made 50000 of these motors in 1939? So is the 5 something else and this is the 1st 39 model to roll off the line? Thanks

My thought is that your tag rceived one too many zeros.   The first sn was 9031-0001

Is the 5 the designation for a 5″ longer tail shaft? I was thinking it would have been a -5 but maybe they put the 5 in front? Does this make it the 1st off the line for that year? I know it doesn’t add value but it add “cool” factor

The 5″ longer version would not be a 9031, it would be 9032.

5 digits in serial number due to being a Canadian built motor?

Looks like Bobw has it right.  Most Canadian built Evinrude models from 1947-1950 started with sn 50001.  That’s the oldest Canadian list I have.
