Sounds really good. I would imagine that the way
they are constructed it is hard to get back together
without some slight binding. Small horse power
motors like yours really struggle, epically when
running slow, till they get some run time and
free up.A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
April 18, 2018 at 12:15 pm #74236Joe, thanks for the link. I see the heat range of "5" under the specs,
but if "5" is in the middle of the heat range, then their cross reference
to Champion D18Y (549) shows a heat range of "18"…….. not sure
what’s up with that!quote joesnuffy:I looked up the autolite 3116 heat range and it was a 5 . That should be middle of the road heat range I would think combine that with the cold water you were using I would think the motor would have ran cooler on the rear of cylinder. I can’t help but wonder if their is a restriction of flow of water or if it might pump more when mounted on an actual boat. Just a thinking out load.

When I have used hotter spark plugs they normally get pretty hot to the touch of the base of them fairly quickly like 1 minute I can tell when their a hot plug using my finger on the base of plug. Sometimes it also lets me know when a plug isn’t firing as it should after like a minute or 2 I feel the plug bases to see how they compare to one-another.

April 18, 2018 at 12:20 pm #74237Dave, no head on this cylinder. I blew high pressure air through
the passages when I had it apart and didn’t notice any signs
of pluggage. It does pump a full stream of water out the tell tale.quote Dave Bernard:IS the head water cooled?Prepare to be boarded!
April 18, 2018 at 12:27 pm #74238Tubs, I believe it was pure luck if any of these crankcase or lower unit
"steel stampings" didn’t cause any binding at the factory when new!
I tried "tweeking" the flange of one stamping with a hammer to get
the halves to mate better, and hence not leak.Mumbles, after today the little Thor built engine will probably
hang on the rack until I die. Now that I’ve heard it run, my
motto is "Quit while you’re ahead" 😀 , but I’m anxious to
hear yours run! You’re my idol Buck. Now you are giving me inspiration to try and get mine running!

I think Champion goes to double digit heat ranges sometimes to space them out further a double digit chart. Not not sure where an 18 would fall into that method. Since its pumping water well I would try the plug it actually calls for which hopefully would help with the heat. I do think its awesome you got it running.

April 18, 2018 at 4:09 pm #74255I’ll order a new plug on the Net, not sure when I’ll get
to the "big town".In case anyone is looking for the Spark Plug information for the subject motor,
this is what I have……Original – Champion 6M
Replacements shown on the Net are….
Autolite 386
Champion D14 (514)Unfortunately, the Autolite 386 shows up as a "resistor" plug.
Not sure about the Champion, D14.Prepare to be boarded!

The Champion D14 is NOT a resistor plug . . .April 18, 2018 at 10:45 pm #74272Thanks Garry, I’ll order the Champion plug tonight.
I tried rope starting it today to see what would happen.
It’s a stubborn little thing. 🙄 Some times it would
start up with a mighty roar, but only run three seconds.
Sometimes it seemed like no fuel, sometimes it seem
flooded. Will wait until I get the new plug and my shoulder
heals before I try again, lol.Prepare to be boarded!

They’re probably a collector item in their own right.
There was some ancient Autolite plugs in the K-50
Johnson I’m working on. Forgot to write the number
down, but I’ll save them regardless.Prepare to be boarded!
