I have a chance to acquire a 1940 3 hp Sea King (Mont. Wards/Mercury) that looks a lot like K model Mercs I have worked on/owned in the past. Except the gas tank wraps around the back of the flywheel, rather than having the stylized Buck Rogers look like other early Mercs (Comet, etc.). What type of magneto and carb do these motors have? Specifically coils, points? I would like to make it run, but don’t want to wind up with a wall hanger because of parts availability. It has the one-piece stylized lower leg and unit like a Comet, so I’m guessing it has an impeller behind the prop? Any input is welcome…thanks in advance.

1940 Kiekhaefer Mercury, Wizard or Sea King singles are about the same to work on. The original water pump is an oscillator. Many parts from later models can be exchanged including
either of the later water pump assemblies so you have to be prepared to find it may not be
same as when it left factory. Both 1940 and 1941 Sea King singles from Kiekhaefer have a
poppet valve fuel mixer carburetor like device…which I am told can be made to work just fine.
Wico FW 1329B Magneto. Coils should not be a problem as it is probably still good and if
not replaceable, wiring and condenser probably shot but points should clean up.
Prewar Kiekhaefer singles could also have Eisemann 61H magneto. with same comments.
Coils and oscillator pucks are available..

I have exact same model. It had a pin holed gas tank and a stuck piston but otherwise ok.
Sometimes lower cover bearing is worn. I have had several lower covers bored, bushed
and reamed by a great machinist. Fun to work. Not a lot of parts to keep track of.
