      Hey guys!

I have a 1940 Champion SF1 that I am cleaning up.  Any suggestions on a method to remove heavy carbon deposits from very loose exhaust?  I was considering using something like “EasyOff” oven cleaner.  Not sure if this is a good idea or not, or if there is a better method.

Also, the exhaust pipe was held on loosely  by a cotter-pin.  The interaction between the male fitting from the exhaust port on the block and the female tailpipe has a good 1/8 inch of play.  Is this the original design, or a field fix by a previous owner?

      Thank you for any suggestions.

      Respectfully,

      Matt

My S1F Champion had a cotter pin, and with a worn hole as
well. I just replaced it with a larger SS cotter pin.

        Prepare to be boarded!

Using “Easy Off” oven cleaner to remove carbon
has been suggested here in the past.
I’ve never tried it. If you decide to try it
I’d be interested in hearing your results.

I’ve used Easy Off a few times to remove carbon buildup.   Here’s the exhaust housing on an RD-18 I rebuilt a few years ago – works good.  Never had an issue with it etching the metal but I don’t let it soak too long.
