I have a 1940 Eaton Viking model 463 which I believe is the same as an Elto Pal.
I have had it running in the past but can’t seem to get it going now. I’ve done a pretty thorough going over of the motor, but I’m not having any success.
Spark – it has spark – it didn’t until recently, discovered that the lead that goes from the primary side of the coil to the points had an invisible break in it – inside the insulation. Coil primary and secondary seem to be ok, condenser seems to be ok and points are clean and have been properly set. It has a J8 plug in it which I believe is the correct plu.
Compression – I thought it was weak so I replaced the rings and honed the cylinder and I think it has as much compression as these things ever had.
Fuel – running 24:1 mix, have cleaned the carb thoroughly and made sure fuel was flowing where it should be. I’ve set the float tospec (fuel level 23/32 below top of bowl) and made sure the poppet spring was the correct length and the clearance to the stop was correct.
I’m starting with the jet set at 1.5 turns out.
When I try to start it I get nothing, not even a cough. There is fuel flowing to the cylinder as I see a little bit of it on the water after attempting to start the motor.
What am I missing?
July 19, 2021 at 2:41 pm #243260Is there any side play in the crankshaft? If so,
the crankcase may be losing suction pressure.Prepare to be boarded!
July 19, 2021 at 3:27 pm #243265Haven’t checked that – guessing I need to pull the head off the lower end to check. If there is play, what’s involved in fixing it? Bearing replacement, or is it just some kind of packing – the diagrams I have are not clear.
Will do that next week when I am back at the cottage.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

I’ve found it’s usually the top crankshaft bushing that wears the most,
from the weight of the flywheel, I suppose. Not sure if yours has
replaceable bushings or not. If the bushing is bad enough,
you can usually tell by pushing the flywheel from side to side
to check for radial wear.
I would try what Tubs says first before you tear anything apart though!Prepare to be boarded!
July 27, 2021 at 2:46 pm #243738Checked play in the shaft, nothing side to side and a very tiny amount front to back. Enough to get a little click if I push hard, but not enough to allow easy movement. I suspect that’s not the problem.
July 27, 2021 at 5:23 pm #243748As a check for lack of vacuum because of worn main bearings, I would suggest you try starting it with an electric drill using a socket on the crankshaft nut.
Hopefully, it will start and run at high speed.
However, I think you will find that it will die when you try to get the motor to idle…….as Buc suggested, this could mean that the main bearings are worn.Another thing to check is to listen if the carb check valve makes a “clack” sound as you revolve the flywheel to suck fuel in.
Hope this helps.
