If memory serves me right, you can’t remove complete carb from a Mate or Cub. Body of carb is part of crankcase.

May 24, 2016 at 8:59 pm #37094Yes…it does make sense. I will try your suggestions and let you know.
May 24, 2016 at 11:47 pm #37104OK…here is an update…
You referred to a hole that needs to be clean on the poppet valve. Below is the poppet valve. If this is the hole, I made sure it is clean. This is a picture of the float. I dipped it twice into fuel proof dope. I think I need a new one!
I lapped the needle with valve grinding compound. This picture (below) shows the float with fuel in the bowl. I pushed the float down onto the needle until I felt the bottom clip "snap" into the groove. The fuel fills the bowl to about 1/2" from the top. I would have put it all back together but I lost the top clip that holds the float down! So, I am going to get some float material and make a float and get a clip to hold it down. The picture shows the one clip I did NOT lose and was put under the float after I took this picture.
Also, I made 2 washers for the needle adjustment so I think that is sealing better as well.
I don’t know how to check the poppet to make sure it open correctly. To make it work, it has to be installed. If it is installed I can’t see or measure it. Or, am I missing something??
Your thoughts???
May 25, 2016 at 1:27 am #37122Great post Tubs!
Would you have any pictures of how to test the spring on the valve seat to obtain the correct pressure?
Bob DMay 25, 2016 at 9:59 am #37139Bill, I had a dumb moment there, as I had forgotten about the carburetor being cast into the block. Tubs pictures and descriptions [well done Tubs] explain what my idea was about testing the carburetor. You should be able to trace the fuel flow through the carburetor, from the float bowl until it exits into the intake of the powerhead.I must confess I have never done this on a Mate, but have done it on the Scout,Ranger, Sea King Midget, etc.
Can you here the poppet working as you crank the motor over? I would think that you should… I know on the other motors that I mentioned, you can easily hear it working.May 25, 2016 at 1:23 pm #37145Jerry: Not sure I can hear the poppet. I DO hear the compression as it spins. If there is a poppet noise, it could be masked in with the compression. Just a thought, maybe I can simultaneously pull the rope and watch the needle at the bottom of the poppet to see if it is moving. My wife says I am not coordinated enough to do two things at once like walk and take the garbage out at the same time, but I will try it!
