hi so never seen this before took the flywheel off and to my surprise the coil laminations and flywheel magnet were black with some kind of black paint or spray was that common to do back then i was wondering if i should clean them to bare metal i do have spark or just leave it alone i have seen wires and under plate coated with the black tar substance but nothing other than that. thanks for any info like maybe the spark would be stronger if i cleaned it up to bare metal ?

Yes, that black coating was very common. I’ve found it on a lot of
old OMC motors. Not sure if it was for anti-corrosion, or what.
Depending on it’s condition, sometimes I leave “as is” or
remove it all and leave bare.
